Wedding Photo Album Do’s + Don’ts

The time has finally come. Your wedding photographs are in and so the fun begins!

With photos in hand, you take a walk down memory lane and reminisce one of the best days of your life. These snapshots will take you back to that wonderful day every time you look at them, how awesome is that!?

Now comes the hard part: sorting through hundreds of photos to decide which shots to include in your official wedding album. It’s a process that can seem incredibly overwhelming, but I am here to assure you that it does not have to be a stressful project!

Not sure how to decide which photos should make the cut? In this blog, I map out a quick + easy guide to assist you in creating the perfect wedding album.

Let’s get started!

Wedding Albums Should Be Highlights, Not Galleries

You’re probably thinking, I love them all, why pick and choose!

Although I completely understand this thought process, it is not the best approach. The key with wedding albums is to include the best of the best, the photographs you could look at every single day and never get tired of! By narrowing it down, you give your favorites the attention they deserve.

Remember, you are not creating a wedding novel. Pair down your selections to feature your favorites and you will quickly feel at ease with the results. Plus, you can always display other wedding images with gallery walls or on tables across your home.

Less is More, Keep it Clean

Following the first tip I shared, you should avoid overpacking your album pages.

If you’ve taken the first tip into consideration, you should have a much more manageable selection of photos to include. That way, you can avoid having too many photos and not enough room!

You may be wondering, what should the format look like? As a rule of thumb, I typically recommend sticking to two photos per page. This keeps your album clean and will look more put together in the end.

Let me reiterate one more time: wedding albums are NOT photo dumps!

Making Your Photo Selections

Now that we are on the same page and can agree that less is more, it’s time to pick those perfect portraits! There truly is a sweet spot for selecting the number of photos you move forward with. If you choose too many, you create a bit of a mess. If you choose too little, you may not get the full effect!

Here’s my recommendations for exactly how many types of photographs you should include in your album to get that perfect medium:

  • 10 detail shots

    • Dress, suit, décor, the venue, paper, florals, or anything personal to you

  • 3-5 shots of you getting ready

  • 3-5 first look images

  • 5-10 images from the ceremony

    • Walking down the aisle + the vow and ring exchanges. Don’t forget the exit shot of you two as a married couple!

  • 5-10 portraits

    • These shots add such a personal touch to every album

  • 3-5 cocktail hour shots

  • 2-5 first dance shots

  • 5-10 reception images

  • 2-3 family + group photos

    • I would honestly skip this, but I get how those photos could be meaningful to you. Choose the very important ones that feature your closest family and friends

It’s About You and No One Else

These pictures should evoke special emotions just for you. Do not worry or even take into consideration anyone else looking at this album and what they may or may not like. It’s your album, make it entirely for you!

If you like it, roll with it!

I hope this list has eased your mind and helped you decide on which photographs to include in your wedding album! Your album is such an important memento and deserves the utmost attention and if you’re still not sure if you wanna have one or not, feel free to have a look at all the album options and personalization!

Best of luck and happy wedding album making!
